Palm Sunday a/k/a Triumphant Entry commemorates the time when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and the people waved palm branches and cheered him as the coming King. The Old Testament prophet Zechariah had foretold the arrival of the Messianic king in Jerusalem via the humble conveyance of a colt.

"Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!
Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and having salvation,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey." Zechariah 9:9

Zechariah wrote these words about 480 years before Jesus rode into
Jerusalem on a donkey (Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-40;
John 12:12-19). The donkey is an animal symbolic of humility, peace
and Davidic royalty. The colt of a donkey not only symbolizes
humility and meekness, but the colt had not been ridden, so it was
not ever put to secular use.

WHAT IT SIGNIFIES TO US

1. "Triumphal Entry", also known as "Palm Sunday", is the
day that marks when Jesus Christ was recognized and
proclaimed "King for a Day". Those who hailed him "King" were those
who would shout a week later for His crucifixion.

2. Kingship - In this triumphal entry, our Lord revealed
the kind of kingship that He and the Father accepted. The Christ
had come to be a King, the King of Glory.

Matthew proclaimed Him as such. Wise men from the East had come
searching and proclaimed it as such: "Where is He that is born King
of the Jews?" (Matthew 2:2) was the question. They asked .Jesus came
as the Son of David. Matthew prepared his reader for the
significance of Jesus' Jerusalem experience by prefacing his
account with a Miracle found only in his gospel, the book of
Matthew.

The World Book Encyclopedia says this about Palm Sunday
Palm Sunday is the first day of Holy Week. It celebrates the story of
Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, where people spread palm
branches and clothing before Him. During Palm Sunday services, many
churches distribute cut palm leaves, sometimes woven into the shape
of a cross. Greek Orthodox Christians receive branches of fragrant
bay leaves. The leaves are then used in cooking during the year.

Here is what Encarta Online says about Palm Sunday:
Palm Sunday, in Christianity, Sunday before Easter, so called from
the custom of blessing palms and of carrying portions of branches in
procession, in commemoration of the triumphal entry of Jesus into
Jerusalem. The custom may be traced back at least to the 4th century.
Faure, Jean Baptiste (1830-1914), French baritone of grand opera and
concert stage; also famed as composer of sacred songs, notably 'The
Palms', often a part of Palm Sunday church services.

From Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia Deluxe we read: "Pageant &
Parades - In Roman Catholic nations there are Holy Week processions
in many cities. (Holy Week consists of the seven days before Easter,
beginning with Palm Sunday.) These pageants commemorate the last days
of Jesus on Earth and often end with a short Passion play that
includes a mock trial and crucifixion."
